Are Custom Mouthguards the Solution to Sports-Related Injuries?

Do you often get nervous that your son or daughter will fall victim to a sports-related mouth injury? We’re sure that if you had the opportunity to prevent an injury, you’d take us up on the offer.

Well today’s your lucky day…here’s your opportunity — A custom mouthguard from ImpactMouthguards.com.

Two scenarios showing that custom mouthguards can prevent mouth injuries

The first scenario:

Little 11-year-old Johnny was dribbling down the basketball court on a fast break play when he got fouled by the opponent and hit in the mouth. The result: a cracked tooth.

Could this cracked tooth have been prevented if Little Johnny was wearing a mouthguard?

Many experts and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry say that mouthguards can prevent some sports-related injuries.

The second scenario:

Brian is at high school football practice and takes a hard hit to the ground. The result: a knocked-out tooth.

Even though Brian was at practice and not playing during Friday night’s game against their rival team, his knocked-out tooth could have been prevented if he wore a custom mouthguard.

Types of dental injuries that can occur while playing sports

Dental injuries can be classified into three categories:

  1. fracture (chipped/broken tooth or a root fracture)
  2. avulsion (knocked-out tooth, including the tooth root)
  3. luxation (tooth remains in the socket, but not in the correct position; i.e. tooth is pushed farther back than normal)

The solution for sports-related injuries— a custom mouthguard

Many of these types of dental injuries can be prevented while playing sports, regardless of whether a person is playing recreational or competitive sports. To prevent mouth injuries, the American Dental Association recommends that athletes wear custom mouthguards for sports that promote collision or contact (just about any sport).

Can custom mouthguards prevent sports concussions?

The definitive answer is still up in the air. However, there are several studies and programs that are looking into the effectiveness of mouthguards and the prevention of sports-related concussions. Some people claim that custom mouthguards can reduce the rate of concussions, whereas others say no.

Save your teeth— don’t play sports without a custom mouthguard

Even though there is mixed evidence that custom guards can prevent concussions, what we do know is that mouthguards are a necessity for athletes.
